LMT will Install 100 5G Base Stations This Year
Latvia’s leading mobile operator and technology innovation company LMT by the end of 2021 plans to install 100 5G base stations throughout Latvia. As a result, 5G capabilities will be available to even wider range of private individuals and businessmen.
“With the rapid growth of data consumption, the quality of the network increasingly affects the provision of public functions and the ability of the entire economic sectors to survive. Consequently, a comprehensive, powerful 5G data transmission network which opens new possibilities for the daily use of artificial intelligence, IoT, drones and other solutions, is a prerequisite for the long-term development of our country and society. We have been working purposefully for several years to make 5G available to developers of solutions in Latvia, and now it’s time for 5G to reach a much wider range of customers,” says LMT President Juris Binde.
Currently, dozens of 5G base stations have already been installed in Riga, Kuldīga, Ventspils, Ogre, Ikšķile, Sigulda, Skrīveri, as well as in many other cities and locations in Latvia. In these locations with adequate 5G network coverage and capacity the customers will be able to take full advantage of the network with a 5G router in their homes and offices.
As reported earlier, LMT together with the technology company “MikroTik” created a 5G router that allows to download data with unprecedented capacity, providing users with a better service experience even during peak hours and allowing to enjoy faster Internet, video streaming on multiple devices simultaneously, etc. The first LMT customers – residents of Ādaži – started using 5G internet and the latest generation routers at home already in the spring of this year.
As emphasised by LMT President: “LMT already participates in several European research and development projects enabling to be present in the development of the latest innovation projects, to create new innovative technology products for export, as well as to cooperate and develop partnerships with international companies and universities. The expansion of the 5G network throughout the territory of Latvia will significantly increase these opportunities.”
