From 9 to 11 June 2026, the 5G4LIVES project consortium gathered in Torino, Italy, for its Annual General Assembly, 5G4LIVES Academy, and live demonstration program, continuing the project’s work on 5G-enabled solutions for public safety, emergency response based on drone technologies and automation, and risk prevention.
The three-day program brought together project partners from Latvia and Italy to review progress across the project’s work packages, exchange regulatory and technical insights, and demonstrate how advanced 5G mobile network connectivity can support emergency management services in urban environments.
The first day of the assembly, held at CTE Next, focused on consortium updates across the project’s key work packages. Sessions covered project coordination, technical development, validation activities, communication, dissemination, and exploitation, followed by an open consortium discussion on next steps. Additionally, LMT presented the results of WP3 – 5G4LIVES System Development and Integration – which summarized the consortium’s work on 5G network technologies, drone solutions, software tools, and a computer vision component for automation developed by LMT.
Day 2 was dedicated to the 5G4LIVES Academy, structured around four thematic blocks: regulations, technologies, use cases, and final pitches. The program opened with an introduction to the UIC2 network, followed by presentations on the Torino regulatory sandbox and 5G spectrum use for UAVs in Europe, including restrictions, the Riga case study, and progress at the CEPT level.
In the technology session focused on 5G, WindTre delivered a presentation titled "Market Thoughts: High-Potential 5G Applications on a Public Network," while LMT Group shared its experience on the topic "Integration of Drones into the 5G Ecosystem: the case of the 5G4LIVES Project".
The use case session focused on Riga and Torino, the two pilot cities at the center of the 5G4LIVES project. Partners also presented related innovation initiatives, including the AMAZING6G and ISABHEL projects, strengthening links between 5G4LIVES and the wider European ecosystem for smart cities, unmanned aerial systems, and next-generation connectivity.
The program concluded on 11 June with a demonstration day at Torino’s Municipal Civil Protection premises. The session included an introduction to local civil protection operations, live demonstrations, and filming, offering partners an opportunity to observe the project’s concepts in an operational emergency management context.
5G4LIVES is a collaborative project aimed at enabling the development of emergency management and risk prevention services, with a focus on search-and-rescue operations in Riga, Latvia, and natural-disaster management in Torino, Italy. In Riga, the project explores how drones powered by 5G connectivity can support real-time monitoring in waterside areas such as Ķīšezers Lake and Vecāķi Beach, enabling faster response to emergencies and more efficient search and rescue operations.
The project unites public- and private-sector partners from Latvia and Italy, including Riga State City Municipal Agency, Riga State City Municipal Police, LMT, the Electronic Communications Office of Latvia, VEFRESH, WIND TRE SPA, Comune di Torino, and the Polytechnic University of Turin. Through this collaboration, 5G4LIVES continues to advance practical solutions for safer, smarter, and more resilient cities.
